Password Hints for the MHmicroscopy Domain

Good Passwords have:

  • No dictionary words (any language)
  • 17 or more characters
  • At least 8 characters are truly random
  • Been changed less than 365 days ago
  • Upper case
  • Lower case
  • Numbers
  • Symbols.  The more the better  e.g.  ~!@#$%^&*_-+=`|\(){}[]:;"'<>,.?/        (Avoid  "  '  `  |  space since they are not good in command boxes)
  • No words found in a dictionary
  • Are unique and not used elsewhere currently or in the past
  • Unusual capitalizations
  • Been well encrypted if stores on your electronic devices
  • e.g. http://www.kingston.com/us/usb/encrypted_security#dtvp30 or use a password manager 

    Bad Passwords have:

  • <17 characters
  • Not changed in 366 days
  • Contain user's name
  • Contain account name
  • Family member names
  • Use pet's names
  • Birthdays
  • Phone numbers
  • Car license plate numbers
  • Are stored on you computer or any other electronic device in plain text. e.g. in Word document, e-mail
  • Any info available on social media
  • Pattern of keys on the keyboard. e.g. zxcvb, ~!@#, qwery, 12345, 67890, {}, [], $%^&
  • Excessive repeats, e.g. LLLL, *****, 77777777
  • Based on movie & book tittles
  • Based on Bible, Quran, Torah, etc. texts
  • Words found in any dictionary
  • Have trivial substitutions, e.g. 0 <> O, e <> 3, A <>4, 1 <> i,   e.g. p@$$w0rd
  • Zip codes
  • Social security numbers
  • PID numbers
  • Used on other systems, e.g. facebook, iTunes, bank accounts, NY Times
  • On a postit near the computer, monitor, keyboard
  • Been typed into the username box by accident on any system
  • Summer 2017, Summer 2022

    Avoid:
  • Spaces
  • Tabs
  • Quotes
  • Password strength tip - not considered such a good idea anymore
